World Storytelling Day

Many thanks to Storytelling Vic member Susan Hall who offered to organise and host an event to celebrate World Storytelling Day for 2017.
Susan Hall
With her connections in the Geelong Libraries, Susan booked us a space in the DOME Library and Heritage Centre. Many of us learned new stories to bring to this event and made good use of Fabled Nights in Newport to practice.

Alex and co
It was a mixed event - all kinds of stories and folks of all ages. Alex recruited the kids to help with the refrain of his story.

Durgah Devi
Durgah Devi dazzled with two stories including treating us to a version of The Hare and the Tortoise in Tamil. Also we need to thank Dee for arriving with boxes of exquisite cup cakes.

So that's it till next year. Story Vic thrives on the support and energy of members and a hard working committee. World Storytelling Day events were energised several years ago and hosted by Teena Hartnett. We have her to thank for getting them off the ground and now WSD is the first event we post in our calendar every year. Thank you Teena for sowing the seeds.

Strategic StoryWork for Social Change
For Peer Workers - Self Advocates - Social Change Agents - Activists - Campaigners

A good story has the power to create change the world. Stories can tell us what is happening and how those happenings impact on people and the environment.  Stories can also show us what change we can create in the world, and if it is a really good story, it will tell us how to make that change happen. This workshop takes people through a process of using strategic StoryWork to lean how to tell the story of your ‘lived experience’ , the story of the of the social justice issue you are working on, and a story that will move people to action on your particular social justice issue. You will learn how to tell your story in ways that foster community, explore shared values, create hope and influence others on a path of social justice in action orientated ways.

Fabled Nights in Newport: March 17 and WSD: March 19

Come on over to Newport and join the storytellers as they strut their stuff, wrestle new stories into shape or learn the art from scratch.
We are using these nights to grow. All genres of story welcome: personal, yarns, folk tale and myth. We welcome stories in all languages. So if you are more comfortable telling tales in your mother tongue - come along.

We blink under the lights, film and time each other (if we want to)  and generally encourage each other to have a go. We aim to land our stories in 8 minutes but you know ... that takes practice!

Recently some of us have been using Fabled Nights to practice for World Storytelling Day. (see below)

WHERE: Newport Community HUB 13 Mason Street. Approach from the park, a short walk from the Newport Station
WHEN: 17 March (the 3rd Friday of the month)
TIME: 7.30 pm - 10.00 pm
COST: $5.00 or $3.00 Story Vic and Newport Fiddle and Folk Club members

*We ask that kind hearts and common sense prevail - misogynist, racist and homophobic stories hurt people. Please don't bring them to Fabled nights.

REMINDER: WORLD STORYTELLING DAY

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. Its a time when people gather to tell stories and listen to stories in as many languages and in as many places as possible.

Come along and celebrate with us, bring ears to listen or a story to share (8 mins max). There will be stories for all ages.

This event has been organised for us and will be hosted by Storytelling Vic member Susan Hall

WHEN: Sunday 19 March
TIME: 2.00 - 4.00 pm
WHERE: The Dome  (Geelong Library and Heritage Centre)
51 Little Mallop Street, Geelong.
COST: FREE
*The Dome is a short walk from the Geelong Station.

International Women's Day: RAW Garden Storytelling

RAW Garden monthly storytelling is now into its second year and has well and truly found its direction. Durgah Devi Palinasamy (Storytelling Vic) and Mariam Issa (RAW) hold the space for people to be vulnerable, funny, adventurous and excited about sharing.
The numbers are steadily growing and more and more people are coming along and finding the confidence to share a story: personal, folk ... whatever comes to mind.
Tatiana Scott photographs the events giving us a wonderful selection of images to share with those of you were unable to join us.
This year we are asking if people would like to bring a plate of food (if they can) to share, as all the talking in the middle of the day requires sustenance.
The March gathering was a celebration in line with International Women's Day: Be Bold for Change.
We laughed, we cried, we laughed some more, we shared food and enjoyed the garden.
NEXT: RAW Garden Storytelling in April 2.
TIME: 12.00pm - 2.00pm (although we always seen to go over time!)
WHERE: 325 South Rd Brighton East
NO BOOKINGS required, pay at the gate.
COST: $15 or $10 SAV members
