Greetings Story Lovers.

We're already into February and the storytelling year is launching into action.

Just to remind you ...

Fabled Nights has a new name: Newport Storytellers

Fabled Nights has changed its name is no longer running as a Storytelling Australia Victoria event. We are now simply, Newport Storytellers and we are nestled under the broad wings of the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club.

We continue in partnership with the Hobsons Bay Library and gather at the Newport Hub on the 3rd Friday of the month February - November.

Newport Storytellers has a new blog

I've set up a new blog for all the news concerning the Newport Storytellers. Please subscribe and (if I've done it right) you will get a message in your inbox whenever there is a post, probably one a month.

On the new blog you'll find all you need to know: dates, times, etiquette and a description of what we aim to do.

In time I will set up a Facebook group for those of you who use this platform but one thing at a time.

Business as usual

Newport Storytellers will continue to be an informal space to come and practice and develop your storytelling skills and when the opportunity arrives, we may venture into performance spaces at festivals, libraries etc. We also take great pride in welcome visiting storytellers from interstate and overseas. And we are very keen on tea and cake.

Our Image

Our friend, artist Rex Smeal, created the image you see here - we will use this throughout 2020.

Co-ordination

For now I'm happy to continue co-coordinating Newport Storytellers as I have good support. I look forward to seeing your faces at our first gathering on Friday February 21.

DATES AND DETAILS: At the risk of repeating myself ...

Please visit our new blog and SUBSCRIBE and you will stay in the story loop. And while you're there, you can read up on all the dates and deets for 2020.

* It's important you do this as this blog is slowly being retired.

See you on the 21st February,

Jackie Kerin
The imagery of fairy tales is as potent as any spell,
whether through the power of the words to conjure carriages made of pumpkins or
blue bearded villains, or the art that can present those words to our sight in
illustrations, sculptures, jewellery, costumes, photography, paintings, food
Hello Story Folk

This month is our final Fabled Nights for 2019.

And we have a special guest!

Mala Rao is from Chennai, Tamil Nadu, India. She has many hats including Microbiologist, Librarian and a Teacher. But for some time now, she has been telling stories. Calling herself 'The Tale Traveler', she loves to travel and share stories.

Please come and meet Mala, make her welcome and bring a story to share and ears to listen.

Recently at Fabled Nights we have been learning how to record ourselves with a view to making a podcast. We are always learning something. Of course if you come along, you will be under no pressure - we will switch off and just listen. (If we can find the on/off switch!)

Fabled Nights in Newport is an informal open-hearted space for people who want to learn to craft true tales, traditional stories, tall tales and yarns; heart to heart and without notes. We welcome beginners and experienced folks. So come and strut your stuff, share what you know, try out a new story or tell a tale for the first time.

There's room for around 10 storytellers and we ask that stories be no longer than 10 minutes, give or take. We ask that stories be said not read.

We reserve 2 - 15 minute places for people who want to try out longer stories.

Let kind hearts and common sense prevail: racist and homophobic stories hurt people so please don't bring them to Fabled Nights.

WHEN: Friday 18th October 7.30pm - 10.00pm
WHERE: Newport Community HUB 13 Mason Street, Newport
COST: $5.00 or $3.00 (Storytelling Vic and Newport Fiddle and Folk Club members).
Greetings Story Lovers.

We are delighted to be able to offer some warm and welcoming storyteller hospitality to Singaporean, Kamini Ramachandran.

Kamini founded Moonshadow Stories in 2004 with the aim of promoting oral storytelling. She is a familiar face in storytelling festivals and conferences across Europe and Asia and many of you will remember when she visited Australia for the Sydney International Storytelling Conference. Those of you who attended World Storytelling Day this year will also remember the delightful story Kamini recorded for us to enjoy.

Kamini is the creative producer of the StoryFest, an annual festival in Singapore that celebrates and showcases storytelling from around the world.

Sadly Kamini has only a day to connect with the Victorian community.

Please if you would like to join us for lunch that would be delightful. Having searched ‘quiet cafes in Melbourne’, we have come up with Dymocks Books Cafe. The menu includes gluten free, vegetarian and vegan and is central.

Kamini would like to explore some of Melbourne’s sights so we thought lunch between 12.30 - 1.30/2.00 pm would give her some flexibility.

Please if you wish to join us, RSVP Jackie by text or a call 0412 2100 98. Please be sure to do this so in the unlikely event we have to change cafes, we can let you know.

WHERE: Dymocks Books Lower Ground, 234 Collins Street, CBD
https://www.zomato.com/melbourne/dymocks-books-cafe-1-cbd

WHEN: Thursday 26th September

TIME: 12.30 - 1.30/2.00

Best wishes to you all.

Storytelling Australia Victoria and proudly hospitable.

Storytelling Australia (Victoria)http://www.blogger.com/profile/04895365813099142906noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-462046218380174302.post-44628917023788191062019-09-18T04:23:00.002-07:002019-09-18T04:23:32.189-07:00Fabled Nights September 20

This blog has been rather quiet of late - are you busy out there? I hope so.

We keep this blog going as a service to our members, so ...

If you've paid your dues

please send us your news!

This is a monthly reminder that Fabled Nights in Newport is on again this Friday.

In the depths of winter our numbers drop but we still gather, practice stories, welcome visitors, drink tea, eat cake and hatch plans.

Last month we talked a lot about learning to record and edit a series. Some of our older attendees, in particular have tales to go and are enthusiastic.

Our good friends and supporters, the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club are learning to use the recording studio at the Newport HUB and if we are clever, we could join forces with music and story.

So please join us this Friday.

Yes it's cold and yes it's dark but it's always worth the adventure. We're still smiling with our success at the Newport Folk Festival. We were invited to 'show our chops' and we certainly did that. It was an evening of moving, hilarious and thought-provoking storytelling. Many thanks to all who responded to the Expression of Interest and tossed their hats into the ring.

Hello Storylovers,

A quick but important message directed to those of you who enjoy our website and link to Storytelling Australia Victoria.

As we shift away from the not for profit model and shed some of the tasks that our voluntary team have been attending to, there will be changes. We'll notify you as we go.

Kate Lawrence has been overseeing our website for quite some time now, and I think you will all agree, she has done a splendid job.

As part of the changes we decided to shift the website to a free model and it is now powered by Weebly.

https://storytellingvictoria.weebly.com/

As time permits, we will peck away at other tasks but like a ship - it's slowly she goes.

It's a festival from the heart, that kicks above its weight and that opens its arms wide to embrace the broader community in a celebration of song, story and dance. The weekend offers workshops and performances with something for everyone.

The storytelling part of the program is rich and varied and largely supported by Storytelling Vic members and associates.
WHAT IS FABLED NIGHTS

Fabled Nights in Newport is an open-hearted space for people who
want to learn to craft true tales, traditional stories, tall tales and
yarns; heart to heart and without notes. We welcome beginners and
experienced folks. So come and strut your stuff, share what you know,
try out a new story or tell a tale for the first time.

There's
room for around 10 storytellers and we ask that stories be no longer
than 10 minutes, give or take. We ask that stories be said not read.

We reserve 2 - 15 minute places for people who want to try out longer stories.

Let
kind hearts and commonsense prevail: racist and homophobic stories hurt
people so please don't bring them to Fabled Nights.

A Bundle of Sticks is the musical story that celebrates the birth of democracy in Australia.

Written and performed by Jan 'Yarn' Wositzky - Bushwackers Band co-founder, musician, and renowned storyteller - in collaboration with director and writer Sue Ingleton - APG, Australia You're Standing In It, Dimboola - it's a lively, heart-felt, fun and rebel-rousing show that tells of the hitherto unknown 15,000 strong 1851 Monster Meeting of Diggers on Forest Creek (Chewton, Castlemaine).

It was Australia's first mass political protest. They created a democratic movement that won the vote and led to the 1854 bloodshed at Eureka.

I'm re-posting our photos and videos from World Storytelling Day as I've received feedback that some of you could not access the videos.

I experimented with embedding them from Facebook - clearly that does not work for everyone, so now I've uploaded them to Youtube. I hope you can all see them now.

World Storytelling Day is our most ambitious event in the calendar. It
seems to grow every year. This year the subcommittee who pulled it
together was Anna Manuel (WSD Kids) and Durgah Devi Palanisamy (Adults)
with Daniela Bücheler-Scott and Jackie Kerin. The decision to run two
events came about as a result of your feedback last year. We listen!

Hosted at The Dock, we kicked off at 11.00 am with World Storytelling
Day for Kids. We had a full house of children with their adults in tow.
The team of specialist early childhood storytellers entranced,
enthralled and excited babies, toddlers and primary age children.

This video will give you a glimpse of the fun.
Anna Manuel is the special guest at the Garden on April 7. With her arrival in Australia 18 months ago, Anna brought with her a fresh vision and energy. She has boosted enthusiasm and awareness for bilingual storytelling, become a key member of the Australian Kamishibai Association, taken on a committee role for Storytelling Australia Victoria and oragnised the recent World Storytelling Day for Kids.

Anna is heading to Bangkok for a while (she will return). This is your chance to meet Anna before she goes or say your farewell.

Bring a story to tell or ears to listen.
This month Daniela Bücheler-Scott is our host.
And finally our wondrous host and hard working Storytelling Australia Victoria volunteer, Durgah Devi Palinasamy from Deelightful Tales. We thank Dee for offering to curate World Storytelling Day for the second year in a row. We know how time consuming events are to plan. We also thank the Storytelling Vic volunteers who have offered to help on the day. Without you, it wouldn't happen.
The year is kicking off with public events for you all to participate in, group shows and individuals making their mark.
For your diary ...
FABLED NIGHTS IN NEWPORT kicks off this Friday and we have the space booked for the third Friday of the month up until November.
Fabled Nights will continue as a night to practice and share stories, give feedback, share resources and ideas, to welcome beginners and encourage the more experienced to keep raising the bar.

This month we hope that those who are planning to tell stories at World Storytelling Day will come along and have a practice. If Alex is available, he will bring us some lights so tellers can have a go under the brightness.

We'll also make time to talk about how you would like to see the year unfold, whether you would like us to set themes or plan an event where we can strut our stuff; perhaps you would like to have a go at hosting or helping on the door.

All genres of story welcome. Let kind hearts and

STORYTELLING AUSTRALIA VICTORIA is celebrating WORLD STORYTELLING DAY with two performances: one for children and one for adults.

As part the celebrations, the AKA (Australian Kamishibai Association) will be there with a display of Kamishibai stages to drool over and stories for sale. What a great opportunity to meet some the passionate Melbourne Kamishibai storytellers.
