The
Wasp Treatment: Italo Calvino’s Marcovaldo tales at the Swiss Italian Festa
I will be performing at the Swiss Italian Festa on 4 November in Daylesford, performing three of Italo Calvino’s exquisite Marcovaldo tales. The stories take place in a very poor industrial city in northern Italy in the early 1950s, the Italy of neo-realistic movies.
I
enjoyed the Calvino stories … the gusto, vitality, bravado, spirit, passion
that you brought to them, and admired the way you could also offer a certain
restraint that allowed the ironic humor to prevail ... each story’s ending was
nicely allowed to hang in the air, and your transitional “stage business”
worked well to bridge the stories. Your show was a wonderful treat, and
memorable. – Daylesford Words in Winter Festival
“Calvino is surely among the handful of
living writers that can be called, without hesitation, great … in the spinning
of his simple, magical stories we are captured, delighted, informed, horrified,
reprimanded and rewarded; we are afraid and we are given hope. Calvino’s only
subject is the world and how we may live in it…” San Francisco
Chronicle.
Daylesford-based storyteller and past president of the Swiss and Italian Festa (1995 – 2001), Anne E Stewart, will also wind her way through 20 years of of Swiss and Italian Festa history. Anne will tell of her involvement, including a visit by internationally renowned author / illustrator Tomie DePaola as well as recount some of Tomie’s classic folktales.
