Clare Coburn: Talk and Workshop 16 17 May 2014

Dear lovers of creativity
I'm always happy when we turn back the clocks and see the first colour in deciduous trees. Are sunset and sunrise really brighter or am I just noticing them more? Nature embraces transformation so easily--I'm envious, and keen to nourish my own creativity.

Right now, I'm occupied with a wonderful new project which I hope will lead to a publication of some kind, I'll let you know as it progresses. In the meantime, I have a talk and workshop coming up at the Jung Society on 16 and 17 May where I'll be exploring the themes of change, imagination and creativity in very practical ways.

Both the talk and the workshop will be suitable for people who have absolutely no experience of telling stories and will also offer something if you already use story, creativity and imagination in your work or life.

For registration and pricing contact Clare: clare@fabled.com.au
And now you'll have to click on the link if you're interested in the Jung Society and more information.

Also, come along for some stories at ladders to the moon, 303 High Street, Northcote from 7.30pm 13 April where I will join  other storytellers to tell tales in the traditional style. For just $10 you can enjoy another evening full of stories of wish, wonder and change.
Enjoy!

Warmly

Clare

International friendships bearing fruit: Tasmania will have a Wassailing Festival 9 July 2014

(pic: Christine and Martin helping to net the apple tree in Jackie Kerin's back yard Feb 2014)

Martin Jefferd is a UK storyteller based in Bristol. With family in Victoria, Martin and Christine have become regular summer visitors. Martin sought out the Vic tellers several years ago and has attended our AGMs and story swaps.

Martin comes from apple country. The first story he shared with us referenced a Wassailing celebration, where the orchards are honoured and cider is poured into the earth to awake the cider apple trees and to scare away evil spirits ensuring a good harvest of fruit in the Autumn. This festival is still popular in the West Country, England.

It’s a long story but in a nutshell, Martin also has connections to Willie Smith’s Organic Cider Brewery in the Huon Valley in Tasmania and it’s the crew at Willie Smiths, who are planning to put the spotlight on the Huon Valley through a celebration focused on the humble apple.

The festival will be based at the Apple Shed and surrounding properties.

There will be a Winter feast featuring local produce, storytelling, folk music, bonfires, Morris dancing, a Wassailing celebration and culminates with the Jack in the Green (a human tree) falling over at the end of the night.

The Tassie Tellers have been learning apple stories and Martin and several Vic tellers have contributed to the collection. If you know a good one – send it to the Tasmanians!

Dark MOFO finishes on July 5 and the inaugural Huon Valley event, on Saturday, July 19, will be the Huon Encore to Dark MOFO.

Celebrating World Storytelling Day: Monsters and Dragons 2014

World Storytelling Day is a global celebration of the art of oral storytelling. It is celebrated every year on the first day of the autumn equinox in the southern hemisphere and the spring equinox in the north. The theme this year was Monsters and Dragons.

Our inaugural event started with an invitation from the Dutch Storytelling Foundation inspired by the Swedes and the Canadians.

The Dutch Storytellers initiated a video project where Storytellers from around the world were invited to record stories to be shared globally as part of the celebrations. Stories were contributed from tellers from: Mexico, Singapore, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Austria … The Victorian storytellers that jumped on board were JB Rowley, Peter Fernon, Jackie Kerin and Roslyn Quin. You can see them  HERE

As momentum for this wonderful event swells, the Victorian Storytellers wish to  grow their involvement and that is the theme for 2015: ‘Wishes’!

Thank you to The Boyd Community Hub and (especially Natalie) who made us so welcome.

Port Fairy Folk Music Festival has words 2014

The Port Fairy Folk Music Festival is primarily about the music but there is always space for words.  Jim Haynes has been running a program that celebrates words "spoken, written, recited, sung and shouted" for over 20 years.

Jim has a deep love of "Australiana"and has connections to the Bush Poets and Country music scene. He is the author of 15 books on Australia's social history and verse heritage.

This year he invited me (from Storytelling Vic) and Bush Poet Bill Kearns (from NSW) to contribute to the debates, workshop, concert, book launch and the Pat Glover memorial Storytelling Award.

Jim and I are chalk and cheese and that's the fun of it. The teasing and mocking was endless and good spirited and that's why I love Festivals!

Big thanks to Vic storyteller Julie Perrin for popping into the Pat Glover and sharing a story while the judges conferred.

You can read more about my adventures, and see the magnificent beards on display at the Pat Glover HERE

And here is Jim captured on camera talking about his role at Port Fairy. Thanks Jim for keeping the storytelling alive at PF.
