World Storytelling Day March 24: Wise Fools

Put Saturday March 24 in the diary as the day Storytelling Australia Victoria is preparing to celebrate World Storytelling Day.

Plans are underway, to be confirmed at this point in time, but we can say that we will be gathering at the Library at the Dock in the afternoon of March 24.

This year, the task of organising has fallen into the care of Durgah Devi Palanisamy who is busy pulling together the threads. Members can expect an email soon.

For members who are keen to plan an event for WSD, we are always eager to support you and to help to get the message out there. The more the merrier! Don't think twice about sharing so we can share.

The theme this year is Wise Fools and if you are interested, you might like to start thinking about the theme for 2019 - Myths, Legends and Epics.

In case it went under your radar, WSD has a new website where you can register your event alongside the rest of the world.  HERE.  Check it out, the excitement is palpable!

NIDAnights: Spirit of Place: 15 February 2018

This evening will be hosted by Kate Lawrence. Kate is a communication artist; she is a storyteller, speaker, facilitator and writer. She hosts, coaches, teaches and speaks. She is the founding director of Story Wise, a TEDx speaker, a former community lawyer and a life member of the Victoria Women’s Football League. She is also a valued member of Storytelling Australia Victoria.
 
Place can evoke a heady mix of images and emotions - the vast expanse of desert land, the salty roar of the ocean, the aching heartbreak of pollution.

Join us for an intimate evening of eclectic stories about ‘Place’, from a curated weave of folk, fable and contemporary storytellers.

Through the lens of story, we’ll explore the big questions: Can nurturing a love of spaces fuel a passion for sustainability? Do stories deepen our connection to country and community? How do we, all at once, love and grieve and heal our relationship to place?

We’ll also bask in the simple pleasures: sights, smells, sounds, and the roller coaster ride of a good story.

RAW GARDEN STORYTELLING IS BACK! 4 February 2018

 

RAW Garden Storytelling is a partnership event with Mariam Issa and the RAW Garden and Storytelling Vic. 

The Garden celebrates the uniqueness and aspirations of multicultural women through gardening, storytelling, crafts and cooking. 

Durgah Devi Palanisamy (Dee) from Storytelling Vic is our host. Dee will have a mix of special guests and story games and there is always a space for friends to tell a tale.
 
THEMES: Sometimes we have a theme but we are not strict about this and will let you know if there is something in particular we would like to explore. We value listeners and storytellers equally and take pride in welcoming newcomers to RAW.

Opportunities: Australian Fairy Tale Society and AOST

Storytelling Australia Victoria is all about telling stories but some of us also like to write, podcast, blog and vlog and all of us can talk story till the cows come home!

Here are two opportunities from our members, to share your story interests and talents : The Australian Fairy Tale Society and Art of Oral Story Telling (AOST) editor, Lana Woolf.

ATTENTION: FAIRY TALE SPINNERS!

Bold heroes and heroines, tricksters, thieves and animal helpers. The Australian Fairy Tale Society Ezine is launching a short story fairy tale competition.

• Theme: 'Cunning & Cleverness'
• Word limit: 100 - 1500 words
• Closing date: 17th April 2018

It's time to let your imagination swirl into the realm of fairy tales.
Re-construct your favourite fairy tale or spin us a new yarn.
There are prizes to be won and the three winning entries will be published in the winter edition of the Ezine.
 
Our external judges are Monique Mulligan, Sophie Masson and Nike Sulway.

Opportunities in 2018 with our Partners and Associates

We do our best at Storytelling Australia Victoria to share as much storytelling news as we can gather that we believe is of interest to Victorians.

On Facebook we share any and all Victorian storytelling news, regardless of the membership status of the storytellers. This is a public site and is embedded in the HOME page of our website so you do not have to be a member of Facebook to check it out. There is always a lot to explore.

NEWPORT FOLK FESTIVAL June 29th - July 1st 2018

 

The Newport Fiddle and Folk Club is a great supporter of Storytelling Australia Victoria. As well as promoting us in their newsletters, several of their members are also keen storytellers and regulars at our monthly gathering: Fabled Nights in Newport.

The storytellers have hosted an annual open floor session for the Folk Festival for many years; Stories by the Fire and last year we also offered a workshop.

However you might have an idea for a show or workshop that you would like to offer the festival.
