Jackie Kerin: Children's Week. Woodend 27 October 2012

I do enjoy travelling around and sharing the story of Phar Lap the wonder horse.

Saturday 27 October I will be in Woodend, firstly at the Library for some storytelling and later I will wander down to the New Leaves Bookshop for book signings.

The history of Woodend is closely linked to the gold rush. Arriving in Melbourne in the 1850s, many fevered hopefuls shouldered pics and shovels and marched up Mt Alexander Rd to Diggers Rest, then through the forest to emerge at Woodend. There is much to see in the vicinity and I plan to stay overnight and spend the weekend exploring the surrounds which include Hanging Rock.

I believe Woodend supports a large horse-racing community. Come and say 'Hi'.

If you can't join me in Woodend but would like to buy a copy of Phar Lap the wonder horse, just google - he's everywhere on line. Or better still, most good book stores have him in stock, especially at this time of year. If you would like a taste of the story visit me here and I will tell you personally.

Phar Lap is written in rhyming couplets in the ballad making tradition. This makes it easy to learn by heart. The recitation of ballads still thrives at folk festivals around Australia and the bush poets are easy to spot with broad-brimmed hats, waistcoats and beards. Although the balladeering events are dominated by blokes, there are always a few women willing to recite the odd 'pome' and I am one of those.

Woodend Library (cnr Forest and High Streets): Saturday 27 October 10,30 - 11.30 am
New Leaves Book Shop (cnr Anslow and Collier streets): 2.00 - 300 pm

Ballarat Storytellers. 23 October 2012

An Invitation to Everyone Who Loves a Good Yarn!

After six years of meeting during the day, the Ballarat Storytellers (BST) thinks it is mature enough to meet during an evening as well!
The first ever evening meeting will be held on Tuesday 23rd October at The Church Retro Cafe in Albert Street, Ballarat Central, opposite the TAFE buildings, from 7.30pm until 9pm.
Tea, coffee and cake will be available to purchase from the proprietors, who are opening especially for the event.
The Ballarat Storytellers are hoping to swell their membership which is currently free. A ‘hat’ is sometimes passed around to contribute to printing and postage costs, but that is all.
Six years ago a group of like-minded people gathered at a cafe by Lake Wendouree. The aim was to maintain the ancient art of storytelling and create an opportunity for people to develop their skills. Over the years the group has entertained a variety of audiences and had a lot of fun along the way.
Since its involvement with students from the Australian Catholic University, the BST wishes to encourage as many people as possible to enjoy listening to stories being told, not just read from books. There is a world of difference between the two activities. We would like everyone to enjoy this ancient art and dive into its refreshing waters, bathed in all the emotions it arouses and surface to see the world with different eyes.
All five of your senses will be stimulated on Tuesday 23rd October at The Church Retro Cafe so come along and be entertained or entertain! Indulge in the delicious food and drink on offer and be blown away by the decor. The proprietors will show you true Irish hospitality and we hope this will be the first of many such evenings.

135c Albert St, Ballarat Central
Come and listen to stories and maybe tell one of your own.
Hosts: Noreen and her Staff and The Ballarat Storytellers
