An Author for All Seasons

author and storyteller Jackie Kerin.

I’m a storyteller. I practice the traditional art of spoken story. This ancient art predates the book. It could be said that the tradition of storytelling is connected to the book like blossom to fruit.

Jackie Kerin has a habit of saying: Before there were books, there were stories. Oral storytelling is connected to the book like blossom to fruit.

This professional development seminar is designed to inform and inspire secondary and primary teachers, librarians and those interested in promoting literacy.

In an event that is primarily about the written word, its good to see that the organisers recognise the importance that oral storytelling plays in developing literacy and an appreciation of stories written.

This promises to be an inspiring, informative and fun way to celebrate the end of the year with others who are passionate about words - on paper and spoken.

Features of the day include many prizes, gourmet catering, great ideas to implement at the work-place, latest news and availability of presenters, handouts, signings and lively discussion.

Registration fee: $110

Anne E Stewart at Dysart, Queensland mining town

Anne E Stewart has been working at Dysart, a central Queensland mining town.

Last weekend she drove along the Fitzroy Development Road, back to Rockhampton and Yeppoon and spent the weekend with Queensland Storyteller Bettina Nissen at Yeppoon.

On Sunday Bettina and Anne sailed to Great
Keppel, snorkelled and saw many fish and sting rays. Annie even saw a dolphin frolicking around the harbour at Rosslyn Bay.

And all the time there was much talk of story and ideas.

Bettina has sent this photo of Anne for the Vic blog ... with the wind in her hair.

Thanks Bettina for the photo and news of our intrepid Vic Storyteller.

JB Rowley reflects on the power of story

JB was selected to tell her story The Flowerdale Tattoo at the Sydney Festival 2011.

When we tell a story we release it to connect, inspire and touch others in ways that we often do not know about. The Flowerdale Tattoo is a story that has touched others deeply and I have been thrilled to receive feedback from listeners about the effect this story has had on them. Hedley Galt, who writes a regular column in the magazine, Nature & Health was one such listener. Hedley was part of the audience for the live Radio National broadcast in Sydney in January for the 'Hope 2011- stories that must be told’ event and was deeply affected by the story. She has used her experience of listening to The Flowerdale Tattoo to inspire others to ‘embrace the here and now’ in her column on page 12 of the spring edition of the magazine. Below is the online link to the magazine but you will need to pop into your newsagent for a hard copy to read Hedley’s column.
