Anne E Stewart is thrilled to be telling stories at the Love and Devotion: From Persia and Beyond Exhibition at the State Library of Victoria.

Discover the world of Persia and beyond at this special day of activities. Exhibition curators Susan Scollay and Clare Williamson will present an illustrated introduction to the exhibition, and Dr Gillian Evison, Head of Oriental Section at the Bodleian Libraries of the University of Oxford, will discuss the Bodleian’s special collections. Experience the evocative tone of the Turkish yayli tanbur juxtaposed with the modern cello as Nefes Ensemble’s Seher Cagin and Rachel Atkinson present improvisations from Turkish classical music. Navid Akrami and Soheil Bahrami will perform traditional Persian music using regional instruments the tar and tonbak, and acclaimed storyteller Anne E Stewart will tell tales of Persia including the story of the legendary Queen Sheherazade. David Demant: stories from Museum Victoria

Vic Guild storyteller David Demant, is also the Senior Curator, Information and Communication at Museum Victoria.

David is unique among us for his imaginative take on technology, maths and in particular - codes. For those of us who were there, we will never forget the day he created a coded message using the patterns on neenish tarts!

David's expertise is the subject of Episode 23 'Sounds like tech spirit'.

Each day begins with dancing; the singing is so beautiful it makes me weep, and that's before we even start the stories!

What is Rocket Clock?

Rocket Clock is a monthly story slam competition. Ten people each have five minutes to tell a story around a particular theme. Judges in the audience rate each story on both content and performance. Everyone has a great time.

Jackie Kerin: storytelling adventures off the back of a bike

When I first studied theatre, I was fascinated by the idea of taking stories out of buildings and into public spaces - markets, parks, streets ... Although having enjoyed a classical drama training at NIDA in the 70s (yikes! that seems a long time ago) my heart has always skipped a beat when I see a good open air performer. In my younger days I would have been too scared to attempt such a thing but with age I find I care less about the possibility of failure.

Its long been the practice to collect stories from oral traditions and lock them away in books and when folk like me liberate them and put them back on the tongue, we usually find ourselves telling them behind closed doors in schools and libraries. For some time I have been playing with the idea of taking stories back outside - 'plein air' storytelling.

To this end, I bought a new bike. But it had to be a special bike that could handle the load. There was only one up to the task - a Pilen.

I was drawn to the idea of Japanese kamishibai storytelling but creating my own stories and using original artwork. It has taken almost a year from the time my friend Ted Smith built me the Kamishibai stage to getting the bike and rig working. Many have helped along the way. But at last I'm travelling the roads and bike paths of Melbourne.

Sharing stories with colleagues and friends around the world

It's been a busy couple of months with storytellers dropping by from Canada, the UK and Portugal.

There is alway so much to share and so little time.

With storytellers spread out across the State it's not always possible for everyone to connect. Anne Stewart lives in Daylesford, some distance from Melbourne and missed out on meeting our most recent guests Martin Jefferd (UK) and Mariella Bertelli (Canada) at the Gathering. Simply not good enough for one of our life members to miss out on all the fun! Matteo kindly arranged to collect Mariella and bring her across the Westgate Bridge while Anne jumped in her car and travelled east. The meeting point was Jackie Kerin's house where the kettle was on and lunch was waiting.

Of all the Vic storytellers Anne is probably the most travelled having made trips to the Scottish International Storytelling Festival, the Welsh Festival Beyond the Border and others.

Swapping experiences and building networks and friendships around the world is especially exciting for storytellers working in the oral tradition.

Vic Guild welcomes Martin Jefferd and Mariella Bertelli

Thanks to the internet, the Vic Guild has been relishing building relationships with storytellers nationally and internationally. We recently had the pleasure of hosting an event to welcome Martin Jefferd from Bristol (UK) and Mariella Bertelli (Canada). Mcd by Vic storyteller, Matteo, it was wonderful to see not only some of the Guild's longest serving members but a scattering of new faces as well.

The stories were kicked off by JB Rowley - a children's fairy tale about how wattle came to be. This ignited a feisty discussion on the recent split of the Acacia species ... ahh the peripatetic imagination of the storyteller!

Following on, our guest Martin Jefferd, took to the chair. Beginning with news of the story scene in Bristol, Martin urged that we check out the Bristol Storytelling Festival. Martin tells traditional tales to adult audiences. He delivered us a story with heart - a classic tale containing good advice from the 'Henwife' - 'Look after the animals and the animals will look after you'. Martin enjoys seeking out storytellers wherever he travels. He found us on the net and we are grateful to have enjoyed his warmth and generous sharing.

Mariella Bertelli

Mariella is a friend and colleague of Jan Andrews and Jennifer Caley who visited us last year. Mariella tells wonder tales, personal stories and uses kamishibai and toy theatre to craft stories. Her speciality is tales from The Decameron - the 14th century medieval allegory by Giovanni Boccaccio. Although now living in Canada, Mariella grew up in Rome. The richness of her telling is deepened by the musical lilt in her accent. With sensual language and a gleam in her eye, Mariella added layers of innuendo to her tale of the Italian chef who stole the leg of a crane to feed his mistress. Mariella suggested we look at the Canadian storytelling website here and the Federation of European Storytelling.

With these quotes, Matteo invited Vic tellers to take to the chair and share a story or two with our guests. We were thrilled to hear from Kate Lawrence and Julia Reichstein (for both it was their first time in the chair) and old-timer Jim Rush. Jackie Kerin closed the day with a fusion folk and history tale set in south Australia in 1837

Sometimes we need a reason to make the effort to gather and there is none better than extending the hand of hospitality. Because of Martin and Mariella's afternnon tea, we had the joy of seeing long-missed tellers Suzanne Sandow, Patricia and Renata, Janet Tucker, Susan Pepper and Graham Davey.

Once again, thank you to the Mentone Public Subscription Library for opening their doors for our gathering, in particular Jean Critchley, Tony Brooker, Sue Blackford and Julia Reichstein.

A beautiful nude hangs in pride of place in Melbourne's much loved pub, Young and Jackson's. Opposite Flinders Street Station and with a view of the timetable clocks, for decades folk have enjoyed a beer or wine at Y and J's before before catching the train home. No guest of the Vic Guild escapes town without a trip to see Chloe and civilised glass of wine.
Vic storyteller and author JB Rowley, has explored the true story of Chloe in rhyming verse.
This is a song I have written for Chloe.

truckies: truck drivers
wowsers: aggressively puritanical people
connies: tram conductors (phased out in Melbourne in 1996 which angered and saddened many Melbournians)
Yanks: a slang term for an American person sometimes used with affection and sometimes not. During WW2 the American servicemen were often regarded by their Australian counterparts with jealous anger because the Yanks, with their relatively high pay, had the resources to woo the local women.
Y & J’s: Young and Jackson’s hotel; a famous pub in Melbourne, Australia, at the corner of Flinders Street and Swanston Street.

Storytelling Guild Vic welcomes Luis Correia Carmelo

Storytelling Guild Vic recently had the pleasure of welcoming Portuguese storyteller Luis Correia Carmelo to our beautiful city.

Some months ago, Luis contacted the Guild as he was planning to attend a conference organised by Victoria University, The Oral, The Written and Other Verbal Media. Looking for a place to stay while in Melbourne and some Australian storytellers to interview as part of his phD, Julie Perrin and Jackie Kerin were able to stretch out a friendly hand. Luis's visit was very brief so the usual gathering the Guild would organise for a special guest was not possible.

Both Jackie and Luis presented at the conference. Luis's paper was titled: From Male to female and back: personified death in traditional and artistic Portuguese storytelling. In his paper Luis analysed the gender shifts in how Death has been depicted in Portuguese folktale.

With so little time and battling jet lag, Luis was able to squeeze in a some sightseeing. Julie guided him through the Victoria Market and a bush walk at Cape Schanck. During the breaks in the conference Jackie was able able to to take him on a tour of the State Library of Victoria and the now, famously painted, Hosier Lane

It seems that having a a wine in the upstairs bar at Young and Jacksons with 'Chloe' has become a compulsory activity as far as the Vic Guild is concerned. Luis was duly led up the stairs and taken to meet the beautiful girl, so loved and so much part of Melbourne's story.

WIth the advent of the internet, it has been our pleasure to welcome several overseas storytellers - Naomi Wilds, Debbie Guneratne, Dr Nicola Clare Grove from the UK and Jan Andrews and Jennifer Caley form Canada.

And now with Vic storyteller, Gael Cresp organising gatherings on skype we will hopefully be meeting more wonderful tale spinners from around the world.

This blog has seen some wonderful reports of storytelling through this
year - it is heartening to see the variety of events and diversity of the
audience for our skills.

My main contribution this year has been a tentative beginning of an internet story cafe. A report of the first one is on this blog and our second attempt is to be on December 16. I am expecting tellers from New Zealand, The United Kingdom and from Germany to join folk from Queensland and Victoria.

Limitations of internet and technology keep the numbers small (maximum 6

people) but I hope this will improve with time.

The photo is one I took during the first internet story cafe. I keep reminding myself of jerky and grainy early new reel footage of horses and carriages in Melbourne and telling myself to be patient.

AGM

The AGM for the Guild will be held during the first weekend in March 2012 - either 3rd or 4th. Please keep this weekend free and look out for information about plans for storytelling in the future. To keep the Guild going we must have at least 6 committee members - the most critical of whichare a Public Officer (Secretary) and a Treasurer.

I would like to thank Jackie and Beth for their wonderful efforts to keep the blog and face book pages going this year.

In 2012 through the International School of Storytelling, Ashley Ramsden and I will offer an opportunity for you as new and experienced storytellers to deepen your familiarity with the language of the heart: storytelling.

We will offer two courses: a 3 week workshop 'The art of storytelling: where the heart comes alive' 25 June to 13 July, followed by a one week workshop 16 to 20 July 'Next steps: beyond the basics'. Both will be held at the Augustine Centre in Hawthorn.

This is a call to all and any who have a passion around the art and practice of Oral Storytelling to put in a proposal for workshop and/or performance and/or poster for the SydneyInternational Storytelling Conference scheduled for June 1-3 2012.

This conference promises to be a great opportunity for listeners and tellers of stories to develop skills, enjoy performances and interact with others who have a love of Storytelling.

The theme is THE POWER OF STORIES

1. We are seeking proposals for workshops around the following areas:.

Development of storytelling skills and techniques.
Storytelling in Education – Early Childhood, Primary, Secondary, Tertiary, Adult
Storytelling for building community – seniors, youth, church, business etc
Storytelling for healing and well being
Oral history and historical storytelling
Storytelling and culture

Workshop sessions are 100 minutes in length.

We are not looking for academic papers or talks. Workshops should be an engaging and interactive process for participants and concentrate on developing practical skills.

Mentone Library: an Author for all Seasons.

Vic Guild member, Julia Reichstein, has played a significant role in supporting and promoting our storytellers and authors throughout 2011. As the co- ordinator of the Author for all Seasons program, Julia invited Matteo, JB Rowley and Jackie Kerin to speak about their work and tell stories to the Mentone community.

Our storytellers live dispersed lives scattered around Victoria and the strength of our relationship is largely maintained by phone, *skype, and email; it's a rare moment to find four of us under one roof!

Beth Cregan, took over our Facebook from Cindy Lee Harper earlier this year and here we are meeting her for the first time.

Tommy Woodcock was the young man who looked after, and loved, Australia’s legendary racehorse, Phar Lap: the 1930 Melbourne Cup winner and the people’s champion of the Great Depression, who died mysteriously - cradled by Woodcock - in the US after winning the world’s richest race in Agua Caliente, Mexico.

Tommy Woodcock is also fondly remembered as the old man, who almost 50 years later trained the gallant Reckless, second in the 1977 Melbourne Cup, and who famously gave children rides on the stallion just before the race.

Now for the first time you can hear Tommy Woodcock himself, on a triple CD - The Tommy Woodcock Tapes.

These recordings were made in 1984 by storyteller/musician (and Bushwacker’s Band co-founder), Jan ‘Yarn’ Wositzky.

The two met when Tommy came to see one of Jan’s storytelling shows in the Yarrawonga Town Hall. After the show Jan sang Tommy a song about Phar Lap’s jockey, Jim Pike. In return, Tommy began recalling his days with Australia’s most loved racehorse.

Wositzky recalls the moment he knew he had to document Woodcock’s story: “Straight away I knew I was in the company of a superb yarn-spinner; a raconteur who could paint a picture and build a tale through dialogue, with emotion and sentiment, tracing a personal journey through one of Australia’s great legends - the story of Phar Lap. I realized I was listening to the national archives, straight from the horse’s mouth, if you’ll excuse the expression.”

So the two spent a fortnight on a farm near Yarrawonga, shortly before Tommy passed away, and recorded Tommy’s life story: his early days learning to ride up-country; his great mentors; as a jockey in 1920’s Sydney; Phar Lap; battling through the Great Depression and World War Two; his philosophy and training methods; Reckless; the tragedies and hilarities of life; the flood which ended his six decade career, and his retirement to Yarrawonga.

The result of these recordings is the triple CD and book – Me & Phar Lap: The remarkable life of Tommy Woodcock. The book also includes the most extensive analysis of Phar Lap’s death ever published.

Hosted by Victoria University, the Oral, the Written and Other Verbal Media (OWOVM) Conference on Poetics and Discourse will be held in Melbourne, Australia from 12 to 14 December 2011.

With the theme of ‘Testimony, Witness, Authority: the politics and poetics of experience’, the conference brings together practitioners and researchers in a forum to explore the variety of ways experience is reproduced and cultures built through oral, written and other verbal media.

To be held at Victoria University’s city campus in Australia’s cultural capital, Melbourne, the 2011 conference will feature language, voice and text from scholars, composers and performers.

Recently I was at The Hub at Docklands, Melbourne to conduct pre-school story time for the Indian festival of lights (Diwali). In the photo you can see me in action decked out in my salwar kameez (pants and shirt) and dupatta (head scarf) that I bought in India a few years ago. My storytelling apron is over the top as I was about to tell an apron story.

The blue fabric is the deep blue sea. As a precursor to stories about ocean creatures I use the fabric together with a chant. I ask the children to guess what ocean creatures might be in the story. Little Molly might say ‘dolphin’. I float the blue fabric over the head of the children and chant: Dolphins live in the deep blue sea, the deep blue sea. Dolphins live in the deep blue sea and I know because (looking straight at Molly) because Molly told me so. Even the shy kids are eager to join in with this little game when they realise their name will be used in the chant.

On this occasion I varied the game to fit in with Diwali. The goddess Lakshmi emerges from the turmoil of the ocean on Diwali night so I pretended a child might be Lakshmi. I floated the ‘deep blue sea’ over their heads then allowed it to drop gently on the head of a child and asked, “Is this Lakshmi?” Of course they laughed and cried ‘No’. I did the same with several of the children and then started the story.

During the English summer I spent a couple of weeks at Emerson International School of Storytelling in East Sussex, about an hour south east of London. The school is nestled into the side of a hill in Forest Row, just a village away from the Ashdowne Forest, made famous by A.A. Milne.

I had heard about the school of storytelling. The most potent reports came in the stories of the people who’d been to Emerson. Two of the women, Monica Tesselaar and Christina Rowntree decided to offer ongoing workshops, which culminated in delightful happenings known as Located Stories. These events were held in private homes, the storytellers would choose the location in the house or garden; whichever most suited their themes. Stories were told from bathrooms, bedrooms laundries, backyards, sheds and firesides. There was a cross over between ‘professional’ and beginning storytellers. The delight and integrity made me curious about Emerson.

I wasn’t planning to go. The disappointing thing about having been around in any scene for some time is that you become suspicious of whether you really will learn anything new. All this was in my mind before Ashley Ramsden came to Melbourne last Easter. After I had attended a couple of days of his workshops I was hooked. I enrolled in a weeklong course called The storyteller at play.

Come the end of June I was in the storytelling hut, with 20 other souls from all parts of the globe. With impish wiliness, Roi Gai-or and Ashley Ramsden invited us at the very beginning of the workshop, to report back, as if it were the very end of the week.

“Oh, do you remember when we played that game?....” There was a lot of thigh slapping laughter.

Later they had us investigating the symptoms of happiness. Michael Leunig’s cartoon, ‘the seven varieties of ordinary happiness’ segued us into describing moments of our own ordinary happiness (grinding spices, smelling fresh cotton sheets, shaking the dirt from the roots of tiny weeds in the garden). Once we had basked in these exchanges we did an exercise prescribing homeopathic doses for one another. Small acts like sitting in the sun, reduced doses of screen time, more face to face human contact, naps, picnics, reading aloud…. Ah.

Just as I was about to leave I discovered there was a two-week course in Wonder Tales and Biographical stories. There is nothing closer to my heart than the resonance between traditional story and personal lived experience. The trick was that my return ticket to Australia left in the middle of it…

I presented Roi Gai-or with my dilemma. I would love to come back to do the course, this was my territory, and I was increasingly feeling that here was my Tribe. The problem was my return ticket, my obligations etc etc. As if Roi had known me all of my life, a little smile played around the corners of his mouth. “Well Julie,” he said, “I guess you are going to go away and then the day will come to make the decision and you will sit down and decide which mistake you are going to make!

As it turned out, I made the mistake of going back for more. But that, as they say, is another story…

JB Rowley was at Mentone Library on Saturday 24 September 2011 wearing two hats; one as storyteller and one as author.

JB the author was talking about her novel, Whisper My Secret, to a warm and welcoming audience surrounded by shelves of books. When the moment arose for a little light relief JB the storyteller demonstrated the art of oral storytelling with a telling of A Reason to Beat Your Wifefrom Angela Carter’s Second Book of Fairytales.

The intimate setting of this small library allowed for chat and connection with the audience which

included Councillor Rosemary West from Kingston Council as well as local residents and library volunteers, such as Julia Reichstein who organised the series of monthly talks called An Author for all Seasons.

Fellow storyteller and author of Phar Lap the Wonder Horse, Jackie Kerin, will be entertaining another (or perhaps the same) audience at Mentone on Saturday 26 November 2011.

The Skype Story Cafe

On the magical eleventh of the eleventh of 2011 we held the inaugural Skype Story Cafe.

Jackie Kerin, Gael Cresp and Bettina Nissen joined each other via a video link
and shared stories.

Jackie told GOLD! one of her tellable tales, Bettina The Harp, the mouse and the bumcock, a Jack story from Ireland and Gael The silver on the hearth, a traditional tale from Afghanistan. If you are lucky you might get to hear Bettina tell the story some time and then you also will know what a bumcock is...

Both Bettina and Gael had learned their stories especially for this event.

Although there were some technical difficulties with lines dropping in and out,
overall the event was a success and represents a new way for contact between
folk spread from Newport on the western side of Port Phillip to Kilcunda, down
between Phillip Island and Wonthaggi and Deception Bay, 30 minutes north of
Brisbane!

It is also an excellent way for tellers to practice new stories - although nothing
beats telling to a live audience who bring so much to each story.

We hope to hold another Skype Story Cafe before Christmas so if you would like
to be included let Gael know and she will inform you of the date and time (and the
technical needs).

Anne E Stewart at Dysart, Queensland mining town

Anne E Stewart has been working at Dysart, a central Queensland mining town.

Last weekend she drove along the Fitzroy Development Road, back to Rockhampton and Yeppoon and spent the weekend with Queensland Storyteller Bettina Nissen at Yeppoon.

On Sunday Bettina and Anne sailed to Great
Keppel, snorkelled and saw many fish and sting rays. Annie even saw a dolphin frolicking around the harbour at Rosslyn Bay.

And all the time there was much talk of story and ideas.

Bettina has sent this photo of Anne for the Vic blog ... with the wind in her hair.

JB was selected to tell her story The Flowerdale Tattoo at the Sydney Festival 2011.

When we tell a story we release it to connect, inspire and touch others in ways that we often do not know about. The Flowerdale Tattoo is a story that has touched others deeply and I have been thrilled to receive feedback from listeners about the effect this story has had on them. Hedley Galt, who writes a regular column in the magazine, Nature & Health was one such listener. Hedley was part of the audience for the live Radio National broadcast in Sydney in January for the 'Hope 2011- stories that must be told’ event and was deeply affected by the story. She has used her experience of listening to The Flowerdale Tattoo to inspire others to ‘embrace the here and now’ in her column on page 12 of the spring edition of the magazine. Diwali or Deepawali, known as the festival of lights, is an important festival in Hinduism, Jainism, and Sikhism, celebrated for different reasons, occurring between mid-October and mid-November. Lakshi, the goddess of wealth and prosperity, is closely associated with Diwali. It is believed that at Diwali, Lakshmi wanders the streets after sunset spreading wealth and prosperity. Lakshmi is looking for light so people arrange lamps and candles around their homes and in windows to attract Lakshmi to bless their home with prosperity. During Diwali, lights illuminate every corner of India.Some people even leave their doors open on Diwali night, hoping Lakshmi will enter their home and spread wealth within.

Ballan Literacy Trail. National Literacy and Numeracy Day

The tiny town of Ballan is 80 ks west of Melbourne - a straight run on the M8. For several years now Ballan has celebrated National Literacy and Numeracy Day by creating a town of stories.

On both sides of the main street, in front of the shops and in the park, storytellers mix it up with local traders and others who are willing to don a costume, read a story or in the case of the Vic storytellers, spin a yarn like the oral storytellers of old.

Three Vic tellers were spotted on the Trail, Anne E Stewart, Graham Davey and Jackie Kerin but not all were caught on camera.

We did however capture Graham looking impressive in shimmering blue velvet.

At the end of the morning, mingling on the lawns in the smoke of the sausage sizzle, was a bizarre collection of characters. It was a bit like being caught in a fractured fairy tale!

The locals pitched in with their support. Amanda from Peaceful Retreat Nails and Beauty, had prepared a basket of books, looked stunning in pink tulle and read until she froze. With the support of the local Op Shop she was able to give away some beautiful picture books to the delight of the young story browsers.

Jackie Kerin (Vic Guild teller) and Bernard Caleo (comic-book illustrator and storyteller) have been sharing the same the Kamishibai built by Ted Smith from the Newport Fiddle and Folk Club. Superbly crafted, from recycled eucalyptus, dovetailed corners and brass fittings, the Kamishibai is appearing in festivals here there and everywhere.

Jackie has taken the Kamishibai to the regional festivals, Daylesford Words in Winter and Aireys Inlet Festival of Words. It was in Daylesford, as a guest of Vic teller Anne E Stewart, she was caught on film. By the fire, perched on the coffee table and in warm socks and ugg boots, Annie filmed Jackie sharing her story of Split Dog. Next appearance: Ballan Literacy Trail September 2. This tiny town will be transformed into a story town. Under the bull-nose verandahs and in the old vacant shops - storytellers will share their tales. Weather permitting, the Kamishibai will be mounted on the back of Jackie's bike - like the Japanese storytellers of old.

Bernard Caleo was interviewed and filmed by Michael Shirrefs for the ABC program Artworks.

You can see Bernard at the Melbourne Writers Festival where he will be running a Kamishibai workshop and launching a new comic book by Mirranda Burton, Hidden.

George Ivanoff is taking to the speaker's chair this month. Although George is not an oral storyteller, we have included a plug for him on our blog as it is the rich mix of the literary and oral traditions that make this series of talks so exciting. George has written over 50 books for children and teenagers, including fiction and non-fiction. He has books on both the Victorian Premier’s and the NSW Premier’s Reading Challenge booklists. His teen science fiction novel, Gamers’ Quest, won a 2010 Chronos Award for speculative fiction. The sequel,Gamers’ Challenge, is due to be published in September 2011.

And finally, we received this beautiful email from Mentone following on from storyteller Matteo's visit in July.

'On a dreary Saturday morning, inside Mentone Public Subscription Library, the subject was stories. An audience of eighteen sat enchanted, mesmerised and willing passengers in an array of mystical worlds and far-away times, as a gentle, playful, charismatic and relaxed story-teller by the name of Matteo, narrated his way into everyone's hearts. Strumming both guitar and conga drums to set each scene and mood, Matteo invited all to be active players and co-narrators as stories of chivalry, seeming stupidity, daring and courage were shared, explored and disseminated. It resulted in Matteo being barricaded in the library until 1.30pm as guests urged him to "play-on" and keep sharing more! An even greater discovery was made that morning beyond the realms of the joy of oral narrative and Matteo's talent; a forum was evoked, where discussion about our very own everyday challenges, methods of communication and lessons from our individual pasts was exchanged. Guests entered to seek shelter, entertainment and companionship, and left with full bellies and warm, open hearts!

Daylesford Words in Winter August 2011

Words in Winter celebrated its 10th Anniversary. This is a festival that embraces Clunes, Creswick, Trentham, Daylesford, Newstead and Maryborough - towns of the goldfields.

Through the influence and efforts of storyteller and Daylesford resident, Anne E. Stewart, several of the Vic storytellers have made this festival part of their storytelling calendar.

David Demant was here, there and everywhere delivering his Magic Lantern Show - he toured three of the five towns with his beautiful glass slides and exquisite lanterns, courtesy of Museum Victoria.

Anne used her charisma and clout to pull together a panel of storytellers. Jackie Kerin, Jan (Yarn) Wositzky and Matteo were invited to share a little of what brought them to practice the art of oral storytelling.

As part of Words in Winter, Daylesford celebrates a Family Day in the Town Hall. This year over 300 people participated in the day. You can see Matteo in action this photo, swallowed in the crowd during the first session of the day.

Our travelling guest storyteller Bettina Nissen carried the baton into the second session as Matteo and Jackie left to be back in Melbourne before sunset.

Queensland storyteller Bettina Nissen is living the dream. Having purchased a small van and equipped it with some of the necessities of life and a story box full of stories, Bettina has set of on a road trip.

She arrived in Daylesford in time for the Words in Winter Festival. As part of the festivities, there is a family day in the beautiful historic Daylesford Town Hall. Here Bettina found herself surrounded by over 300 children and accompanying adults.

Bettina lived in Melbourne for many years and as well as attending to her own practice, generously mentored beginning Vic tellers strengthening the art of oral storytelling and its place in our part of the world.

Storytelling Australia. National Gathering South Australia 2011

It's a vast country we live in and storytellers are scattered across the continent. There are storytelling Guilds in most States and Territories that serve to support the tellers, in professional practice and in storytelling for pleasure.

The advent of the internet and our skyping skills has encouraged mentoring relationships and skill and resource sharing to a point not previously dreamed of. But sometimes it's good to gather in one place.

South Australia hosted the 2011 Gathering. A three day event, it began with a Friday night concert of stories. Ruth Carson and Graham Ross invited tellers from around the country to participate. Pictured is Graham standing at the venue in front of the South Australian patchwork banner. Cold weather did not deter our audience who filled the room to capacity.

Day two we gathered around a table and with the use of skype continued the national discussion begun several years ago on how to advance storytelling in Australia. You can't see him very well - but that's Jesse the Wind Wanderer beaming in from Western Australia. We also had skypers from Queensland and Northern New South Wales.

Subject to the acceptance of the other Guilds, we

will be known in future as 'Storytelling Australia' and the word 'Guild' will be dropped. Soon we

shall gave a national logo and user friendly website - a gateway to the world that will have links to the member groups around the country.

These discussions were led by Gael Cresp (Victoria) and Shirley Way (Queensland). We thank them for their courage in leading such a feisty group!

Although looking content at the dinner on Saturday night - appearances can be deceptive - we were exhausted.

Day three was a solid round of workshops. With Book Week in August - and librarians and teachers gearing up for the theme 'One World Many Stories', the focus was on sharing new material and storytelling methodologies.

Pictured is Helen Lawry (South Australia) who

kicked off the day. She taught us three new stories and shared her method of memorising. SImultaneously, Gael Cresp worked with a small group of tellers demonstrating the role of story coach. Helen was followed by Jenni Woodroffe (WA) who explained how retellings of traditional tales had been used as a springboard to bookmaking in a primary school setting. Montgomery Kelly (SA) shared his approach to telling to small children and his new book Out of the Storytellers Hat. This is a wonderful new resource for us all. Finally Jackie Kerin (Vic) introduced her kamishibai and demonstrated how she is using it to spread tales in markets, festivals and schools.

On behalf of the Vic Guild, thank you to South Australia for your hospitality and to all the IT organisers who fought off the gremlins and helped facilitate a brilliant discussion on the the advancement of storytelling in Australia.

Glen Eira Storytelling Festival

The Glen Eira Storytelling Festival is a new annual event produced by Glen Eira City Council. The event aims to celebrate storytelling through writing, film, visual art, music and performance and will be held from 11-26 August 2011.

The Glen Eira Storytelling Festival will also incorporate the ‘My Brother Jack Literary Competition’. The competition will open 11 August and close Friday 16 September, with the awards event held Sunday 23 October.

Poetry readings, improvisation performances, workshops, open mic sessions in local cafes, a literary lunch featuring Melbourne author Kerry Greenwood (Phryne Fisher mysteries), feature film screenings, children’s story time sessions and much more will make this an annual event not to be missed!

Newport Folk Festival: WORDS WORDS WORDS

This little festival has gone from strength to strength. Celebrating musicians, visual artists, writers and spoken word.

WORDS is an event dedicated to the wordsmiths in the community and guests, inviting them to step up to the mic and share their creative adventures.

Organised for the Newport Folk Club by Storytelling Vic - this is a mix of poetry, songs, recitation and traditional storytelling.

Pictured here at the mic is Lee Fox sharing with us her newest book for children Ella Kazoo Will Not Go To Sleep (illustrated by Cathy Wilcox). If you are following tales about Kamishibai storytelling in Victoria, Lee is another enthusiast of this style of story making.

Jan (Yarn) Wositzky stepped up with a comic piece. Later that evening Jan performed with the Bushwackers and Bullockies Bush Band in the Newport Substation to finally launch a cd they recorded 37 years ago! The Shearer's Dream.

JB Rowley, author and Vic Guild Storyteller told the story of Scheherazade. Scheherazade is the frame story for One Thousand and One Nights. This title is so familiar but few of us have heard the story and JB tells it masterfully.
